While Wall Street analysts seem to ignore this ticking time bomb, Burry invents a security tool in the event of non-compliance with the terms of the loan agreement, known as "credit default swaps" (CDS; contract in which one party pays the other a certain sum, and this in return undertakes to cover the debt, the debtor fails to meet the credit agreement. If the risk is greater, increasing the price CDSu), which would put an end to the boom in the housing market. Naturally, the owners of the housing market react in horror.

Meanwhile, twenty-something managers Jamie Shipley (Finn Wittrock) and Charlie Geller (John Magaro) also see shoddy housing market. At any price they Want to break into the American financial elite. But they need help to be among sharks finance. Almost miraculously they manage to enlist veteran Ben exchange Rickert (Brad Pitt), who helps them in the project. A project that has to outsmart Wall Street.
When, in 2008, the market eventually will plunge into chaos, they earn millions of dollars, but this experience will change them forever. While the large financial institutions whose carelessness led to the global crisis, fared better or worse, millions of Americans lost their homes, possessions, jobs, savings and still suffer the consequences of financial disaster.
